The easiest way to add an ear to your electronic devices is by adding an electret microphone. This electret capsule microphone is the same mic we use in standard microphone amplifier boards. It contains a small vibrating element that will output a few millivolts peak-to-peak. You will need an op-amp to amplify the signal, and some chips are designed with the amplifier built-in, in which case you can wire it up directly. Moreover, this is an omnidirectional microphone, with -52DB sensitivity and has a 20-20KHz frequency response.
